Brief Description:  Primed Rudder

Today I scuffed and primed the rudder. Again, this process was very involved:

0. Deburr all pieces using grinding wheel and maroon scotchbrite pad (this took an hour).
1. Take all pieces to house
2. Put on gloves
3. Scrub all pieces by hand with maroon scotchbrite pad and PreKote to make a soapy layer on the scuffed surface. Repeat without rinsing and before it dries. Then rinse and dry.
4. Take all pieces back to garage.
5. Mix primer and thinner. Wait 30 minutes for induction.
6. Spray primer. Wait 15 minutes for that side to dry. Flip and repeat.
7. Move parts away from "spray box", arrange the next parts to spray.
8. Eventually finish after a total of 5 hours from the time I showed up to garage.

The spray gun has an issue. It has a dual-pull trigger. Pull a little bit for first stage, and air only flows. Pull more for second stage, and air + primer flows. There's a pressure gauge at the gun that SHOULD show 30 psi with just air, and 20 psi with air and liquid at the second stage pull.

However, when any airflow goes, the gauge immediately reads zero. Instant drop. I already returned and swapped one gun via main with Amazon, this second gun is doing the same thing. I'm not sure why. Maybe the airflow in cubic feet per minute (CFM) is too low? Maybe my air hose is too narrow? Or maybe, as was suggested by the 3M Rep... maybe this gun was part of a bad batch?

The primer job looked splotchy at best because the air wasn't flowing correctly. I eventually adjusted the gun pressure full open, and moved the air compressor gauge from 30psi to 60 psi. Maybe more air would help atomize better? IT WORKED!!! The spray pattern is so beautiful now. It mists perfectly onto the surface and has a great finish. The below pictures don't tell the story well enough. Put simply, I'm happy the earlier primed pieces will eventually be hidden forever. They're primed, but the surface has a pattern that makes clear it's only continuous because multiple splotches touch.

Once I finally finished priming, I moved on to
