Brief Description:  Dimpled VS skin and substructure

Today I finished the spray booth, assembled my drill press, and dimpled the Vertical Stablizer (VS) skin and the VS substructure. Again, I'm only counting the time I actually worked on the aircraft (dimpling), thus the 1.5 hours.

This new paint booth is much roomier, with easier entry, so I'm stoked about spraying in here. Drill Press is from General International, and it spins perfectly true. First use will be with the rudder trailing edge.

The VS Skin was dimpled using the Deep Reach Dimpling Tool (DRDT-2), the large gray C-Frame machine with a lever. I didn't have a platform to hold the skin up to keep the underside from scratching, so I asked Kayla to help, and to bring two pillows. The skin sat on the pillows and together - me holding the skin and Kayla pulling the lever - we dimpled the skin. I paused halfway through the first side to snap a picture.

The DRDT-2 couldn't reach the holes near the skin fold without undoing it, so I skipped those until Kayla was done, and then used a hand squeezer to get into the tight spaces for the last few holes. I then dimpled the sub-structure.

Next step is to touch up the primer on the substructure, which I won't do until I have more pieces for priming. Once that's done, I'll rivet the skin to the substructure, and the Vertical Stabilizer will be complete.
