Brief Description:  Front Spar Vertical Stab

Today was the first time in the shop actually using my tools and actually constructing anything. I read ahead on the plans, picked the parts necessary, and removed the blue vinyl protective wrapping from the metal. Some builders will keep it on longer, or use a soldering iron to peel away only the parts against the holes. I however, will be priming nearly everything and painting the exterior; the processes of both will hide every minor scratch the vinyl protects.

Apparently, the vinyl hardens over time (requiring solvents to remove), and may also conceal corrosion to the aluminum. So the vinyl's gone.

Step One; Attach small metal square (VS-702) to long metal thing (VS-01401) with clekos. The next step called to match drill.

Definitions:
A Cleko is a spring-loaded plunger that uses the holes to clamp pieces together when not yet ready for riveting.

Match Drilling is just aligning two pre-punched holes, and matching them by enlarging one or both. Final drilling is similar, but the plans seem to only use that phrase for one hole at a time.

Once I'd done these two steps, I removed the metal strip from the top, then removed the clekos and de-burred (removed small burrs / sharp edges). I also used the deburring method to remove small patches of corrosion found under the vinyl, thus the scuffed appearance of the surface. I used an angle grinder with a 1" 3M polishing wheel.

The next steps called for dimpling and riveting. Dimpling (making concave dents so rivets sit flush) went easily enough. Riveting, however.... I need more practice since I messed up on these parts. I'll admit mistakes on the first step. No pictures for the bad rivets.
