Brief Description:  Control Surface Final Attach Hardware

"Deep breath... Working through this first section, I've mentioned one thing I did not like about the plans, it was the orientation & placement of the counterweight attach bolts. The likely hood of these ever working loose is slim to none. But I continue to have nitemares about one of these backing out & jamming one of the control surfaces. There is not much disputing the fact that if this were ever to happen, you'd be S.O.L. I intend on glassing over the heads of these bolts in the near future, permenently embedding them in place.

Well, here is a second thing I don't like. Call me a safety freak or whatever, It's my butt in this plane and the butts of those I care about. In my opinion, you can't go far enough in the name of safety!!! Throughout the control system & surface attachement, the plans call out for AN3-#A bolts with a AN365 nut. This nut/ bolt combination only uses an nylon insert locking mechanism which is fine & dandy. The likelyhood of one of these ever coming loose once torqued to specs is once again slim to none. With thousands of RV's, I'm sure my over analization is in the overkill catigory but nonetheless, I am replacing this hardware with AN3-# drilled bolts, MS17835 (locking castle nuts) & cotter pins. This combination uses the same nylon locking mechanism as the stock hardware WITH the addition of locking the nut in place with cotter pins!!! I am guaranteed nothing will ever come loose using this combination. Interestingly enough, Canada requires cotter pinned bolts on all moveable surfaces. Well, I guess I'm Canadian because this is my plan for final attachement of the control surfaces after Phase one is complete & the plane is painted. I will use the stock nuts & bolts until the plane is painted and all of the surfaces come off. I've already recieved the final attach hardware for the empannage. It's packed away and labled "" Final Attach Hardware for After Paint"". Yes, the Harware changes I'm making are probably over kill but for me, it gives me peace of mind knowing my plane (when fi
