Brief Description:  Removable Rudder Fairing

"The reason I wanted this mod is pretty straight forword, I want access to the wiring as I'm running an extra 18 awg wire along with the strobe bundle for options down the road. Plus, I'm using a local ground back there. If I ever get radio noise, I can just swap a connector & have a full ground. Plus #2, I'm extremely anal with maintenance, I want to be sure at every inspection that there is no wire chaffing going on ect. This was an extremely easy mod. I had fitted & and match drilled (#40) the Rudder / Fairing a week or so ago while waiting on some micro to cure on the other empennage tips. Today I when back and final drilled the attachement holes to #27 for #6 stainless steel screws & CS washers. (The spacing I used was 2.5 inches). I counter-sunk the fairing while it was clecoed in place, using the ""harder"" aluminum back hole as a guide. After countersinking the fairing, I came back through with a #6 nutplate jig and drilled holes for the nutplates (in about two seconds). That tool is awesome!!!! highly recomended! Then proceeded to debur, dimple & rivet the nutplates in place. When I replaced the fairing with the final attach SS harware, everything came out perfectly straight with ""tweeking"" of nutplates, screws etc. Easy, easy, easy. When I first asked for suggestions for a removeable fairing on VAF people said they had issues with alignment with the scews, nutplates & CSs.

I elected to go with #6 SS screws and CS SS washers on a 2.5 inch spacing. a total of 14 screws. # 8 scews / washers in this application simply don't leave a decent edge distance. Plus the washers overlap the aluminum. As a former - out of practice old-school A&P apprentice, I did NOT drill the most forward area which would entail drilling through the side of the main rudder spar and/or the control horn bracing. Thats a ""no-no"" in my book, as the forces on that area are insane during spin recovery ect. I only used the intended attach strips & used a heat gun to form the frontal to a nice tight fit.
