While sitting in my shop pondering--something I've found invaluable, just sitting and looking at the plane and thinking--I figured it would be nice to have a place to store a little tool kit, some extra oil, and some wipes and cleaner. There are two huge areas under the baggage compartment floor between the ribs that would make a nice mini-locker for storage. So, I set about designing and making those areas usable.
I made a hole in the floor big enough to easily fit a quart of oil and my tool bag through. Then I cut out a doubler for the edge of the hole to which I fastened the dzus fastener clips. I made a new cover for the access hole out of thicker (.032) aluminum and installed the male dzus fasteners and voila--Mini-Locker. Simple and useful. Now I don't have to worry about oil cans and tool bags banging around if I get the urge to do an aileron roll. ;-)
Thought I took pictures during the process, but guess I didn't. So, here are photos after everything was installed.
