Brief Description:  Pylon Fairing

So the transition from the rear Pylon Support and the top of the Turtledeck, is a tricky area. the builder is supposed to cut a hole, through the turtledeck to fit around the faing, as closely as possible, and fill-in the remaining gap after paint with silicone.

Easy enough, right?

Wrong!

It's very difficult to guess at exactly where, and what shape to make the hole, simply because this has to be done as you do the initial fit of the turtledeck. Very tricky as the turtledeck, by itself berfore mounting, is extremely flexible, so it's akin to cutting an irregualr shaped hole, in a constantly moving target.

Well, my final cut didn't make me happy, it was way too large. Now PA makes a fairing for this area which they use on their LSAs. It's very expensive, and HUGE!

But, I purchased one anyway, sometime last year. Got around to fitting and discovered that not only is it expensive, and very large, mine didn't fit well. It would require some alteration to get it to fit tightly around the aft pylon support.

So I decided to lay-up my own,, directly on the airframe,, which although fitting to my airplane better, was still way too big, and cutting it down still made it look too obvious.

So today, I took another approach, using something I am more familiar with: Aluminum.
I made a simple cover, from .016 Aluminimum, that contours nicely with the turtledeck, and fits very colse arounf the pylon. It will still require some caulking, but I think it look MUCH better than the over-powering fiberglass.
