Brief Description:  EGT Probes

EGT Probes,

Recall that I had an issue with the AVMap EngiBox, EGT readings.
The temps, which should read ambient, were, well, crazy. They showed -200C,, yes, that's a minus sign.

Even reversing the leads, had no change. So I fugured, perhaps the lead wiring wasn't up to snuff, so I ordered and installed, some very high quailty EGT extension cables and replaced all four.

No easy task here, keep in mind where the engine is located with reference to the panel,, UGH!!

So guess what,,
After all this effort (and expense), EGT temps are still crazy.

Time to call AvMap Tech Support,, which is located in Italy. Which means a bit of a time-zone issue.

Resolution:

Apparently, in fine print, the EngiBox documentation states that the K-Type EGT probes, MUST be of the "ungrounded" variety. Frankly, I never knew there was a difference. So, based on a recommendation from the supplier where I originally purchsed the EngiBox, I sprang for four, Westach K-Type probes, which unknown to me at the time, were grounded. They were approx $50/per.

After the conversation with AvMap, their recommended Rotax Ungrounded probe lists at approx $230/per!! Yikes! That's more than the EngiBox itself, just for probes! Westach has an ungrounded version, at approx $130/per,, better,, but still.

I managed to locate some new, ungrounded probes from an eBay supplier, intended for the automotive racing market. I replaced the EGT probes, guess what,, still had crazy readings!

And BTW, the Oil Pressure was still inop.

Finally, after several days of time-zone affected email communications, testing, retesting,, etc,, the folks at AvMap determined that my EngiBox was defective and offered to replace the unit.

Several days later, with the new unit uinstalled,, BINGO! Everything works. (including the Oil Press)

My only concern now is the quailty of the EGT probes,, something I will have to keep an eye on.
But for now, time to MOVE ON!!
