Brief Description:  Woodworking to prepare for wing build

The Van's plans call for some preparatory woodwork prior to the wing build, so given that it was a nice day and the Jodel was on its Annual, I took the opportunity to get out the mitre saw.

The simplest of the three structures is a 'bending brake', which is simply two pieces of 2"x4" timber held together with 5 hinges. The purpose is to bend the trailing edges of flying control surfaces for which the skins on both sides are provided as a single piece - such as the ailerons. As it happens, this structure gets used earlier in the build than wing construction - the elevators' trailing edges are also of this design.

Also a very simple construction is an Assembly Cradle for the fuel tanks; just two pieces of ply into which the tanks will slot, held on a piece of 2x4 that will allow the tank to be moved on the bench during assemblly, sealing and riveting. The ply is cut using a tank nose rib as a template.

Finally, the largest structure is a storage cradle for use when the wings are completed. Again, the main materials are lengths of 2"x4", with MDF at one end onto which the spar ends are placed. The opposite end has MDF and ply, with cutouts which will take the Leading Edges of the completed wing structure. Carpet is used wherever the wings sit on the cradle.
