Brief Description:  Correcting carelessness - a lesson learned

So, did you spot my idiotic error by comparing the drawing in the last entry with the photo of what I actually did?

Yep - I riveted the lower reinforcing plate (R-606PP) to the *wrong* side of the spar!

A particularly bone error since that was now riveted in conjunction with 6 other parts, meaning that correcting the error would be time-consuming and requires extreme care not to drill into structure when drilling out the seventeen (Doh!) rivets involved.

Hey ho - a stiff self-talking too, followed by a couple of days to calm down, then out with the rivet removal tool. One positive point is that all were dome-headed rivets which means that a positive location on the rivet could be achieved with the removal tool to ensure that I only drilled rivet, not underlying structure.

The heads came off easily enough, and with a bit of "fettling" out came the formed rivet shanks.

Next session, I'll refit the parts in the correct order, double & triple check that - sigh - and re-rivet.

A salutory lesson. Those parts had been on and off several times, and each time I'd temporrily attached everything correctly. When it came time to fit everything for the final time, though, rivet fever must have set in and because - despite marking all the parts - I hadn't marked them unambguously, a silly error arose.

It's a particularly daft error because it's such an obvious one - almost the first thing I subconciously said to myself on looking at the rudder plans was "It'd be easy to put that reinforcing plate on the wrong side..."

So, in future, parts will be marked more intelligently in order to head off the less intelligent builder at the pass!

One thing, though: The rivets did *not* come out easily, which gives confidence in the strength of a properly built and riveted structure.
