Brief Description:  Drilling rudder counterbalance weight & priming

Having received my #10 drill overnight (thanks to fast work by Diana Pengilly of Gloster Air Parts), I drilled out the lead weight for the rudder counterbalance, machine countersunk the weight, and match-drilled the relevant rudder rib (R-912).

Then, a new tool for the project - the #10 dimpler, which rather than pressing the dimple into the aluminium uses a male and femal die held together on a screw which makes the dimple by pullig the dies together with a spanner and allen key on the screw thread. Simple and satisfying.

Which is more than can be said for my next attempt at priming...

Spray painting is becoming a real bugbear for me. I thought I'd solved this previously by trial and error: dry the air with a filter inline from the compressor, rough up the aluminium with a Scotchbrite pad to remove the Alclad, wash off the muck with clean water and allow to dry, then prepare for spraying by removing the grease with acetone. Make sure the metal and spraybooth are warm enough.

It's worked before - should be easy. Shouldn't it?

But no - this time, again, the paint runs and the whole thing looks a mess. Hmph.

So, what's wrong? The only thing I can think is that despite the in-line dryer, there is still moisture in the airline.

Tim, my pal who runs an aircraft repair & maintenance facility at Wing Farm strip, dropped by (failing to bring beer, as usual). His advice is that he has FOUR filter/dryers in his paint line, and that I should go and try his setup over Easter to see what difference that makes.

I shall take him up on his offer, and if necessary will raid MachineMart for a couple more filter/dryers.

So, a good day and a frustrating day all at once. I had hoped to be onto rivetting the rudder tomorrow, but that will have to wait.
