Brief Description:  Static Adjustments.

STEP 1.

All of what I call the Static Adjustments must be on the money, and I don't mean close.

1. Lead / Lag. Set to zero. When doing this you must have a level on both the attachment plates and the reflector for the laser. This is a two person job. Take your time and do it right.

2. Headshift - This is critically important and must be done with a fixture as shown in Image 1 with a dial indicator. Bobby was kind enough to help me using his feeler gauge technique but I found that this was not close enough. I machined up the adaptor for the stock Lead/Lag laser holder.

Once it is in place, teeter the head until the MAXIMUM reading shows on the indicator and zero it there. Swap to the other side and do the same. I am willing to bet that you will see at least a .005" difference between the two sides. Do not try to set a level on the head and take a reading, I tried that first and was unable to get consistent readings. Just let it teeter and look at the MAXIMUM.

You will probably need a Propane torch to heat the head to make the shift. Don't try to tighten the bolts till they break (that would be a bad day).

I have done it enough now that it is not as bad as it sounds. Once centered you will probably never do it again.
