Brief Description:  Install Cooling Fan/Clutch Drum

Been on vacation for a week while getting the Cessna 421 paint work repaired. They used the wrong plastic for the ice shields and they cracked one day when the temp was beloe 0 deg F. Cessna finally made a run of the real ones and they are now installed.

Finished hooking up the wires for the governor and installed them in the harness. Tired of wiring so I think now is a good time to put on another big part. This makes me feel like I am getting something done.

Installed the clutch drum/fan and naturally had a problem. The ducting to the oil cooler did not fit, see photo 1. The pilot side is too low and it hits the crossmember keeping the assembly from being level. After much head scratching I took some measurements and went to look at Doug Bryant's ship. All the measurements were similar.

I decided to use the included washers to raise the engine. This turned out to be easier than I thought. It also confirmed that to change the top plugs it is far easier to remove the entire side sheet metal instead of just the little access holes. I got the whole thing torn down and reassembled including cleaning the preservative oil off of all the plugs in under 2 hours.

Another minor problem was the fan hitting the nut plate as shown in Photo 3. This was easily fixed by slightly bending the blades. Yes I know that this will throw the balance off, but they were not perfect from the factory.
