Brief Description:  Rod Ends

Seven strokes back after day one. Today shot 28 on the front 46 on the back. That is why I am not on the tour.

I decided that now was the time to finally tighten up all the rod ends. I started on the throttle assembly. Got it all torqued, cottered and torque sealed. Twisted the grip, crap. Way to much friction. I chose to ignore step of loosening up the rod ends because before everything was tightened it felt great. Not the case with everything tightend up.

So off they came. Went to the hardware store and bought a 1/4" by 1 1/4" fine thread bolt. I got the fine thread because they tighten up better. I stuck it through the rod end and tightened. I then filed three flats on the bolt, using the flats on the nut as a guide.

Yes you will need the flats on the bolt. Two reasons, first you will need it because there is a lot of torque required and secondly if you don't do it the bolt with spin in the chuck and ruin the threads. I doubt that you will be able to do this procedure using a battery operated drill. I hooked up my 1/2" Dewalt corded drill and had at it.

The procedure is to spin it, fast, until you see smoke. You will feel your drill slowing down and torquing up. Stop and dip it in water. The dip will immediately loosen the rod end. You will probably see some hairs of the material form as well.
