Brief Description:  Sump Block off Plate

Time to install the oil suction line.

Photo 1 shows the line installed in the supplied sump plate. The plate comes with a 1/4" pilot hole that needs to be enlarged using a 45/64" drill. Good luck finding one of those at a Big Box Store. I drilled it out then used the boring head on the Bridgeport to enlarge it to size.

After drilling it needs to be tapped. I wound up taking the tap almost full depth, and I still might take it another turn. I strongly advise you to sneak up on the fit. With a tapered thread it is easy to tap too deep. If you do you have a big problem. Tap and test, tap and test etc.

Photo 2 shows that the fitting goes too deep. This must be removed. Even with the Bridgeport I found it easier to just saw it off and file it flush. Photo 3 shows the finished product. Careful filing makes it smooth.

NOTE: This is a very important juncture. This is the oil suction tube. If there is a leak here, due to bad fit, your engine will suck air instead of oil. Typically I don't use gasket goop, but I think I will make an exception here. I have to think there is a better way to do this, but I have not read of any problems.

I was going to weld the fitting to the plate, to gain clearance with the carb tubing, but decided that if I left the fitting high enough to place a bead under the "hose side" then I would not gain any advantedge by welding.

The factory did not supply a new gasket for this plate. My original tore when I took the original sump off. They are cheap <$6 so I am surprised they don't supply one.
