Brief Description:  Counterweight and drive assemblies

Completed W04-09 x2 Channel Assembly

Made jig for aileron drive rib assemble by clamping angle iron to the workbench and placing marking tape to locate rib tip in relation to the end of the assembly. This worked really well as it allowed me to quickly locate the counterweight plate on the rib, hold secure with one hand and drill with the other. All four assemblies came out perfect!

Adam helped for 1 hr and completed drilling all the counter balance and drive assemblies.

While Adam was drilling I was marking up the rib skins for cutting. It’s a complex cut, so I measured a number of times to make sure it was right.

Bent upper flange on pre-ordered tip ribs W06-10 R/L. It comes from the factory at a right angle but needs to be bent to parallel the lower flange. I clamped the rib flat to the table with the flange I wanted to bend at the edge of the table. I used a rubber mallet to bend the flange – it worked fine.

Completed deburring all the holes Adam drilled (couldn’t get him to stick around for that part!). Maria helped rivet the assemblies - W04-05 R/L Aileron Drive Rib Assembly, and W03-03 x 2 Counterbalance Assemblies.

I started drilling the holes in one of the lead counterweights. The plans say step drill and only drill ½ way through for good reason. The lead is soft and really grabs the drill bit, so you need to keep moving the bit in and out of the hole to clear the bit.

Long day but got a lot done!
