I used a metal straight edge to set my hinge clearance as per the drawings. (I learned this trick at the Sonex Builder's workshop!)
The wood and two clamps provided a backing for drilling the first few holes on the outboard end of the elevator prior to installing the elevator ribs and drilling the remaining holes.
Note: The person I purchased the tail kit from had already installed the hinge halves on the horizontal stabilizer. So prior to installing the hinges, I loose fit the elevator and stabilizer together to mark where the hinge needed to be on the elevators so it would line up with the hinge already installed on the horizontal stabilizer.
I know it is early in this process. However, I think getting the elevator square in all planes and the hinges installed in the so they line up is very difficult. It was important to take my time and get this right. I think it would have been much easier to install the hinges on the elevators first, temporarily join the hinge halves, and the position the hinge half against the horizontal stabilizer as the last step. Because of what I purchased, I had to do this in reverse.
