Brief Description:  Leading Edge Re-Do

I took the last month off from building for several reasons. First of all, it's been cold and I just didn't feel like working in the cold garage. Second, I've been in a bit of a seasonal depression brought on by the fact that I screwed up my leading edge. I've been tossing around different ways to patch things together, but I decided to scrap all of my mistakes, make new parts, and start the whole leading edge over. It means using up another 4'x12' sheet of .025, but I just don't want a patched-together mess. I want it done right. Here's what happened. Mistake #1 - I bent the outer leading edge skin a few millimeters off. The bend was not in the same spot for the entire length of the skin. This threw everything out of kilter. I spent hours drilling the skins before discovering this. Bummer. Mistake #2. - I cut the middle skin 2mm too short. In order to try and make it work, I planned for extra rivets and drilled extra holes in nose rib #4. I should have thought this through more. The fix - I fabricated a new nose rib #4, and bent new leading edge skins for the outer and middle sections. We'll have another go at this, and it will be built exactly like the plans specify. Will it take longer and cost more? - yes. Will it be done correctly when it's all said and done? - yes. Am I excited about the prospect of doing it all over again? - not particularly. The good news is that I've already made the new nose rib and bent the skins, so tomorrow I'll start on the leading edge - again.
