Brief Description:  Landing Gear Bending Rig Start

I know it may not look like much, but the piece below took me about an hour to cut out of a 1/2" scrap steel plate. I could have bought new stuff, but I had this scrap and a little time on my hands, so there ya go. This is going to be one of the two frame sides for my landing gear bending rig. I'll be treating it with Ospho rust converter before fitting it up with other pieces and welding it together. You'll see the steps as I go along, so I'm not going to detail it all here now, but let's just say this - 1/2" and 3/8" steel, 20 ton hydraulic jack, grade 5 bolts, 2-inch rollers. Piece of cake. When I made a post to the Matronics list a few weeks ago telling them I was going to be bending my own landing gear, some guy wrote me back in a condecending tone telling me "good luck". Luck really has very little to do with it. I'm not inventing landing gear, just bending it. I'm going to apply the same methods used sucessfully by Wade Jones of Brazoria, TX to bend his - just making a few changes he recommended to the rig. The only parts I'm going to have to buy are two 10" pieces of pipe and some bolts. Should save me about $600. Later when I'm done, if that guy asks me REALLY nicely, I MIGHT rent him my bending rig. :)
