Brief Description: Shipping Cankshaft for Conversion
Yesterday and today I've been working on shipping my crankshaft for conversion. Another builder has located an excellent source for ion nitriding and machine work, so he's going to take care of the details. I'm very excited about this. It marks the first real step in my engine conversion. First, the crank will be magnafluxed - a process that will expose any potentially dangerous imperfections. If it passes that, it will be nitrided to make it harder and less prone to failure while working in an aircraft capability. After that, it will be ground - presumably .10 under, and polished. Next the front of the shaft will be tapped to accept a William Wynne safety shaft for attaching the prop hub. I built my shipping crate WAY too big. I made it 11" x 11" by 28". The 28" dimension is ok, but it could be more like 8" square. Oh well, it'll work fine. Tomorrow it's off to UPS.
