Brief Description:  Switching Models

I've made a significant decision with regard to my airplane project. I'm switching models from the 601 HD to the 601 XL. In the beginning stages of this project, I chose the HD because of its simplicity of design and construction. It has no flaps, and the wing is a constant-chord design. I thought that getting it built would be better than getting into a project that was too difficult or expensive for me to finish. The further I've delved into the construction process, the more I've realized that I really can do this, and that I might as well get the design I really want, instead of settling for one that I know I could finish. The XL has a lot of improvements over the older HD design. Some of the things that influenced my decision are these: (a.) higher payload. I want to do some cross-country flying in the future, and I want to be able to take my wife and my stuff with me. (b.) longer range - bigger fuel tanks (c.) faster cruise speed (d.) spring landing gear (e.) front-hinging canopy (f.) my chosen engine, a Corvair, has been proven to work well with the airframe, and there are experts in the installation that can help me with the process. Also, the XL is a newer design for Zenith, and it's just being supported more than the older designs. The drawings and documentation are better, and that will help me get it built. There is a cost to upgrade my plans, but I've already ordered them from Zenith. I'll keep my same serial number. I'm really excited about the change, and since the tail sections that I've almost completed are shared by all Zodiac models, I haven't wasted any work.
