Brief Description:  Primer

My new 3/32 bit came in from Avery today and it was true and plumb (unlike previous) so i was able to finish machine counter sinking the #40 holes in the front and rear horiz. stab spars. That kept the compressor busy, but only took about 1/2 hour.

I also primed the HS-908 angles which happen to be the only pieces in the empenage kit that are not Alclad, there for are "Required" in the instruction manual to be primed.

I also had a few other parts handy so I primed them as well to experiment. Through this I determined I will not be priming the interior of my craft. I will however prime all required parts and surfaces to receive paint such as in the cockpit and on the exterior.

Sure I would like to have an all epoxy primed interior and exterior! For my situation that is just not realistic from a time and cost standpoint. My initial plan was to prime the ribs and spars too, then decided I would use an aerosol to do so.

Sherwin Williams GBP 988 turned out to be the logical choice. So, purchased about $100 worth (6 cans). I cleaned the parts with Acetone and sprayed a couple coats on. Two hours later i could scrape it off with my fingernail....... Well, over to the parts washer with some acetone and i removed all the primer. Next I gave her hell with the scotch bite pad in my hand and uniformly roughened all the surfaces (probably also removed all the alclad) then i cleaned again and sprayed again. I think this will work better than spraying to the glossy surface, will know tomorrow.

That was enough to get me off the fence. Im not going to be scuffing every square inch of every part to apply an aerosol primer in my backyard in hopes that it will be superior to a factory applied layer of alclad.

Obviously I have the other canted reasons for not priming the entire interior as well.... Such as: I wont need it 30 years from now, Cessna didn't do it, Vans doesn't require it, etc. etc.

So, that is where I stand.
