Brief Description:  Rudder Skin Stiffener Fabrication

Each rudder skin is stiffened by eight longitudinal aluminum angle stiffeners. There are 16 total to fabricate and they come from vans in eight pieces. I cut the pieces in half where indicated on the plan and cut the "slope" into the trailing edge of each stiffener. This is for when the trailing edges of the rudder skin converge together, so it all fits inside.

I was careful to walk through the layout and label each part. Thanks to Smittys RV-9A site I studied some of his photos before proceeding.

I layed the skins on the table, inside facing up and set a stiffener at each respective location. The stiffeners were then cut to length and labeled in order, each one a little shorter than the last. After all the stiffeners were cut to size and layed in position I labeled and clecod them to the skin for match drilling. Once drilled, I disassembled and deburred all parts on the scotch brite wheel. I dimpled the stiffeners with my hand squeezer and decided to prime the stiffeners because of what little amout of alclad was probably left after deburring these narrow parts; afterall, i have about six cans of Sherwin Williams GBP988 left over from when I thought I was going to prime everything.
