Brief Description:  Finish Cowl Attachments

I finished fitting the top and bottom cowl halves to the firewall, and to one another. This took mostly trial and error, removing the cowl several times and block sanding the edges until they are parrallel to each other.

My documentation here of the cowl leaves something to be desired. Much like the slider canopy, the cowl has very little instructions, is very time consuming and really, not much fun at all. Any time i had was spent building it, rather than documenting it though. The methods used were per the isntructions. Some people deviate here and go with 1/4 dzus fasteners, like most production aircraft, but those looked equally as complicated to me and were North of $500 for a kit.

The cowl is attached to the firewall with hinges along the top, bottom and sides. You do not see them when installed. The cowl halves are attached to eachother along the side with hinges as well. Here you can see in the first picture where the hinge pin enters the nosing of the cowl, it has a tab on the end that gets fastened to the cowl. There are a total of 8 hinge segements and pins. The only down side to this method is the hinge pins along the top of the curved portion of the cowl are pretty tough to slide in and out, especially since you need to access them through the oil door.

You can remove the top cowl by removing the two side hinge pins and removing the top two hinge pins (split near the oild door for removal). The bottom cowl can then be removed by removing two pins along the sides of the firewall and two pins along the bottom of the cowl.

It makes for a ver tight, stiff and clean looking cowl.
