Brief Description:  Cowl Finishing

Im using this log as plug to log some previous hours spent on cowl finishing.

The pink fiberglass cowls are delivered with some rather large craters in the honeycomb surface, especially on the outsie rounded corners. Both the inside and the outside of the cowl needs to be adressed. the outside primarily for smoothness and the inside primarily for protection from engine greases. The process is about the same though, just more work on the outside.

Although there are several methods, Vans method in the instructions is probably the best way and the least brain damage, just takes some elbow grease.

You mix up a two part epoxy (thin with acetone to your liking) roll it on, let it cure, sand and repeat until smooth. Ive done two passes on the top cowl so far and one on the bottom. Two passes should be sufficient for the inside and i'm guessing four on the outside.

On the top cowl I used a superfil product (aviation bondo) which worked really well to fill the voids on the outside, but it it takes several hours to sand smooth. I think on the bottom im going to stick with the epoxy method.
