Brief Description:  Engine Arrives

My engine arrived via R&L Carriers. This thing was a beast to unload from the pickup and un-crate. Eventually I built up my new cherry picker and got the engine hung on it to get all the other clutter out of the way. This makes moving the engine around very easy. Hopefully it's on the firewall soon.

The Engine is new Superior XP 0-320-D1A. 160hp max continuous at 2700 rpm. The engine was built by Superior Air Parts but I purchased it from Aerosport Power in Kamloops, B.C. This has roller lifter technology, same as the new Lycomings. I noticed on the data plate that it can also run 91/96 octane in addition to 100LL, which is cool, wasn't expecting that.

There are a handful of companies that produce these Lycoming Clone Engines for experimental aircraft, it seems their primary business is usually Engine Overhauls, rebuilds, etc. for the certififed market. These engines are no different than the certified Lyc's, really, except for the "certified" documentation. In fact they are usually better in a few respects, match flow cylinders, balanced parts, etc. I opted for a basic setup with carb and magnetos, as opposed to fuel injection, electronic ignitions basically for simplicity and reliability.

I researched all the mfg's (ECI, Aersport, Superior, Lycoming, etc.) They were all about the same price, within a couple grand of eachother including shipping and all that. Since I went with a basic setup I ended up choosing the least expensive which also happened to be the most readily available. (others were up to two month lead time) Had mine in a week. Had I the need to go all out with F.I. and Electronic ignition, high compression pistons or a stroker I would have probably had one custom built by ECI or Aerosport. Both seem to good shops and can build one to your specs.
