Brief Description:  Install Landing Gear Mounts

Today i installed the powder coated steel main landing gear brackets. This required using a template to cut holes in the floor of the fuselage to accept the gear leg penetration. I did this using mostly dremel tools for cutting, reaming, grinding and deburring. It took a few iterations to get the mount to slide in and out. (which is no easy feat, it seams like every flange of the mount lies behind some flange of the fuse, there is only one way in and one way out for this thing, and it takes a bit of fenageling.

When its all said and done the main wing spar bolts pass through the bulkead and then on through this gear leg mount mount, therefore I was careful to install some temp hardware bolts through the spar carry-through holes as well as shim the bulkheads apart with some oak shims. I want to make sure when i go to fit the wings i didn't inadvertantely block one of the holes or get these mounts installed out of wack.

So, I ran bolts through all the holes in the rear of the mount to the spar carry through, snugged them up, then proceeded to drill the bolt holes through the sides of the fuselage and into the side flanges of the gear leg mounts, dropping in bolts as I go.

Once everything was drilled i removed the mounts and deburred all the holes. At this time I also stabbed the gear legs into the hole in order to match drill the bolt holes at the top of the gear tower (unaccessible later) I had to remove about 1/2" of powder coat from the gear legs to get them to slide in the hole... i did this based on a tip i recieved from a gentleman who did not, and it was sooo tight he could never get the gear leg back out.

Before reinstalling the mounts i laid a big thick bead of pro-seal around the hole in the bottom of the fuselage and bed the mount into the sealant. I reinstalled and torqued all the fasteners, marking them with torque seal.

Overall pretty straight forward, but with this i felt more like I was working on a truck rather than an airplane... lots of beating, banging, drilling, etc.
