Brief Description:  Aileron Completion

I got a few hours in this week on the ailerons and finished with a full day today. The ailerons are complete with the exception torquing the hinge brackets and mounting to the wing; which i will get done during this coming week.

Like usual i primed all parts with akzo, except the stainless steel counter balance tube and AEX trailing wedge which is used the SW gbp 988 rattle can on.

Deburring the inside of the holes of the tube was challenging, i ran a wad of sand paper through by stuffing it with a broom stick handle, similar to cleaning the barrel of a gun.

Aileron construction was straight forward following the instructions. Weighting the ailerons down is extremely crucial during drilling and riveting of the trailing edge. without weights the trailing edge looks like a snake. I used some 2" x 8" x 16" concrete patio pavers over plywood to evenly distribute the weight and flatten the aileron for drilling and riveting. I planned to used lead shot bags, but could not find any in this concrete jungle. The pavers were only about $.75 cents a piece at the home depot aero supply.

I like working on small parts sucah as these because each process (drilling, deburring, dimpling) goes relativley quick.

The leading edge is blind riveted to the counterbalance tube which is nice. Even riveting the forward edge of the skins to the spar wasnt too bad. (nothing like the elevators).

I finished off but setting double flush rivets in the trailing edge. i DID NOT use pro seal on the trailing edge as I did during the rudder and elevators. It was not necessary and the ailerons turned out perfect.

A lot of people end up scrapping these and starting over... i got er the first time. On to the flaps; which are real similar in construction but twice as big.
