Brief Description:  Start Elevators

Started the elevator by trimming the stiffeners, fluting the ribs and deburring all the edges of all parts.

This is relatively "low-risk" enjoyable work, requiring very little skill.... heck, it took a half hour just to peel the blue protective coating off the parts.

Just like the rudder, the elevator has stiffener ribs that are riveted to the interior of hte skins via back riveting. There are about 30 stiffeners in the elevators but they come in 10 pieces. The plans show you where to trim the excess with an aviation snips, it consists of cutting straight lines between pre-drilled holes, i trimmed each part into three stiffeners and trimmed the excess off each end. They look real accurate all stacked up... stacking is a good way to check your fluting too. I fluted the ribs for the elevator, two of which were the largest ribs fluted thus far, taking more effort than the small ones... i can see the wing ribs will be fun! After fluting you can set on a flat surface and they sit and stack flat and even.

Next i took to the scotch-brite wheel on the drill press for about an hour (wearing dust mask and goggles) When you spend that much time behind the wheel it'll pile up the dust, glad the Harley is covered, gonna have to remember to close the tool box though!
