Called Van's Builder Support to inquire about spar crack as well as Service Bulletin 14-01-31. Van's indicated cracks were not cracks at all, but marks from the clamping during the milling process. Van's checked warehouse stock and found similar marks on all the HS-609PP parts. Van's suggested focused polishing to remove the sharp edges from the crack and then to build on. Decided to face this 'blemish' aft so that it will be visible behind the rudder to monitor the spot. Plan to add an item to annual condition checklist once aircraft is in service to inspect this 'blemish' in case crack begins to propagate.
Also inquired regarding building solution for Service Bulletin 14-01-31 into forward spar at time of build rather than waiting for a crack in the HS-702 forward spar channels. Van's indicated this was a good idea so I ordered SB 14-01-31.8 kit ($21.80 via priority mail)
