Brief Description:  Right Main Spar - Spar Preparation

"Continued with the fabrication of the spar components and lining them up on hte webs. I have drilled the pilot holes for the vertical stiffeners the upper and lower stiffeners at the root of the spar.

I have had problems with getting good drill holes through the attach blocks and have scrapped several. My conclusion is that the drill bench that I am using the base flexes slightly while exerting down force on the drill bit lowering wheel. the end result is that the drillhole travels and does not go perpindicular through the 1 inch block. The hole then does not line up with the bottom marks by about 1-1.5 mm indicating a bad hole. I have made several blocks and scrapped 3 until I was happy with the result. I have ordered more Bar stock from sprcue to replace. It is only about 5 USD per foot but it is the shipping that hurts, but you have to do it . I have also scrapped one of the wing block attach vertical angle pieces as the hole did not line up with the spar web pilot hole dead centre.

I will remake this vertical wing attach angle bracket from the angle that I have ordered with the bar stock.

I think that it will be best to not drill this hole until the bracket and block are firmly attached tothe spar and then use the pilot hole as the reference point and drill through this to mark the block accurately and also the bracket. This will avoid ovaloiding the pieces and introducing slop into it, even though the holes will be enlarged when both spars are lined up for final drilling.

Apart from this the spar is coming together with all pieces inplace. I have to study theplans some more and identify the holes that need to be dimpled and will mark these out so I do not mes it up. There are some holes that need bolts others need driven solid rivets. Care needs to be taken here.

Once donw then I can dress the pieces by deburring and cleaning up ready for priming and assembly."
