"Having started with the rudder, almost successfully, I decided to move on to these parts but with more care hopefully. It is an experience trying to come to terms with the plans as they are very detailed and there are lots of measurements and references. I have to make sure of the referencing and lines etc to make sure I translate the right measurments to the right section etc. Sounds easy doesn't it.
I marked out the dimensions on the aileron skins with my 'sharpie' pens from the USA. They work well. I re-checked my distances and angles and they look good this time. I cut the aileron skins with care using left and right handed cutters from Wicks. It takes some getting used to but I am refining my techniques and realise there is an apprenticeship going on here. I eventuallly get a part that looks like the plans.
I drill out some of the preformed parts to the correct hole sizes and deburr the hoels. I make a spacer section for the aileron balance horn using my new band saw. It works well and also grind it with the rotary grinder wheel which finishes it nicely.
I am not rivetting anything yet as I need to source a few more things like Sctchbrite pads and also the primer paint from the USA. These items are impossible to find in Hong Kong. I have seen China Copy scotchbrite pads but do not want to use them as they can not be guarenteed as to their composition. I am leaning toward the Stewart Systems paint line due to its enviro friendly wash out in water paints and low toxicity. However the shipping will add to the cost.
I have prepared the right aileron and also the left aileron parts. I have to cut the lead balance piece to size. I will have to buy a new hacksaw blade to get through this. It is one solid chunk of lead about 8 inches by 3 inches by 1 inch. It fits into a balance assembly that rivets into the aileron. Is there an easier way to do this??
When I get the paints I can prep them and then prime and then assemble for final costruction. More to come."
