Brief Description:  Right Spar rivetting

Continued with rivetting the new web and spar pieces again for the 2nd time. I started with the Rivet gun but still not satisfied with my technique. I tried the bolt method in the tight upper support bracket at the spar root and this worked well.

I then decided to use the bolt method on the rest as I have been waiting for my squeezer to arrive with rivet sets. I ended up finishing the whole spar with the bolt, actually a 6 inch length of 1 inch diameter steel rod, polished at one end and rounded corners. This worked great and as a result I have no smilies on the rivet heads and no dents/damage on the spar web to worry about.

Conclusion:

I should have used the bolt/ steel rod piece method from day 1.

First it works well. Second it is cheaper than buying a gun and rivet set, save your self about 300 usd. Third it is easy and very controllable for a single person job. I thought it crude and primitive and possibly sub standard but I have been converted and now recomend it. A squeezer would have been good but still could not reach all the parts without more head fittings that also add up . I now have a squeezer for sale and it still hasn't arrived yet from the States.

So I am back to where I started with an almost completed sspar.30 rivets to go as I am also waiting for some flush rivets to arrive to replace a misorder I made that delivered 1 packet of soft aluminium rivets, they were easy to drive but not to spec until I realised they were wrong. I only drove 2 in and replaced them of course. Once these 30 go in I am back to putting the ribs on and drilling the holes for these and rivetting on to spar. Then I can go ahead with putting wing skins on!!!
