Brief Description:  L.E. parts primed!

I had 2 days off this week and decided to spend most of it working on Juliette. It looks like a nice day outside, so it was a day of priming......I started by removing the Van's parts stickers from the L.E. ribs and cleaned the sticky residue with acetone. Next, I washed all the ribs and the splicer strips in the laundy tub with dishwashing liquid. I then set up the two tubs for the alumiprep. I fill one with water and the other with alumiprep (1 part) and water (3 parts). Each piece is scrubbed with a scotch-brite pad and soaked in the mixture. After rinsing I moved the operation into the backyard and dipped each piece in alodine. It still was a little chili out, but not too bad because the sun was out. I next mixed up a batch of primer (AKZO) and primed each piece. I love the way this primer coats and drys fast. After about 10 minutes, you can turn the pieces and spray the other side. After drying, I brought all the parts back in the shop. I've got the priming system down pretty good. I manage to set up and break it all down with ease, now that I've done it several times. After a few hours, I re-assembled the leading edges in the cradles. I clecoed every other hole. Next, I finished countersinking all the rivet holes in the platenuts for the splicer strips. I used the wood jig from before. I used the pneumatic squeezer to rivet all the platenuts on the splicer strip. I clecoed the splicer strips in place. I then used the squeezer to rivet the aft skins holes to the ribs. My yoke did not work for most of the holes, so I just bucked them. The instructions say to begin riveting the skins on at the aft end working toward the leading edge...so that's what I did. It is nice riveting without having pro-seal all over the place.......
