Brief Description:  Rudder Pedal Phenolic Blocks

Dug out the rudder pedals tonight. They are in two pieces, each identical. When placed opposite-end to opposite-end, though, they provide the 4 pedals as shown below.

You can see by the picture 1 below that there are some bushings on each of the pedals. The inner pedal bushings are used only on the tricycle gear version of ths Sonex; I'm building the taildragger, so these are a "don't care".

For the two outer pedals, the bushings serve as the mounting point for the rudder cable adjustment tang. I drilled these out to 1/4". They were roughly that size, but with welding, powder coating, etc., they get a bit closed up.

Next, I cut the 3/4 x 1" phenolic block into 4 lengths, each 3.5" long. These were matched up and sanded to provide an even set, marked as to orientation, etc.

The next step was to drill them with two 1" holes to support the two rudder pedal tubes as shown in pic 2 below.

On one set of blocks, I somehow drilled one very slightly at an angle such that the rudders would bind up when the blocks were clamped on each end. I used the hole saw as a cylinder grinder and straightened it out just a bit so that the pedals swing freely (but not loose) now.

Next steps will be to remove the glareshield so that I can get to the rudder pedal mounting pads that are already riveted to the fuselage.
