Brief Description:  Re-Rigging the Wings

Re-Rigged the wings today. Have waited since I messed them up on the initial rigging back on June 4th. It's been a slow work summer due to the intense heat, but temps broke this week.

Since for all intents and purposes the wings were rigged last time and the angle of incidence set with the rear spar, this was a partial rigging. Sonex instructions recommend that you install the right wing first, since it is the aft-most wing. Then you install the left wing. Well, it was the right (aft) wing that I had messed up last time, so we installed the left wing first. Following the Sonex instructions for post-rigging wing installation, I pushed some drill sleeves thru the fwd wing attach angles into the left wing (fwd) attach blocks to set the wing in its correct orientation in the fuselage.

Installing the right wing took a bit of finagling. I left the aft spar tunnel material in place, but the cleco's holding it in place were causing the right wing to get hung up on installation. Once we resolved that, the wing slid in just fine. We pinned it with the alignment pins and pins thru the aft spar attach points. Then we tapped the drill sleeves thru the aft attach blocks. I made two sets of sleeves for the drill - 1/4" ID and 5/16" ID, The sleeves are just 4130 tubing to keep the drill from wandering and wallowing the attach blocks.

Drilled the 1/4" holes, tapped out the sleeves, installed the 5/16" sleeves, drilled, then tapped them out. I then removed the aft wing attach angles and used a step drill to take it from 5/16" to 3/8" - that way the hole stayed centered instead of possibly going off-center if i used a regular bit.

Next up was getting the aft spar tunnel parts ready to rivet. Additional holes needed to be drilled into the support angle on the tunnel and the vertical angles. Once drilled, the angle stock had to be countersunk and the sheet aluminum of had to be dimpled. Got all ready to rivet, and discovered I had run out of the correct rivets. Rats...
