Mostly just miscellaneious futzing around; it was 14 deg waking up this AM which is shorts weather for you northern-dwellers, but it's pretty danged cold for Ft Worth TX. Daytime high was 27; average for this date is 56. Just relaying that information to set the stage for lack of progress today.
Since I recently received my #20 drill bits, first order ot business was to up-drill horizontal stabilizer skeleton ribs to #20 from #30 on the parts of the rib flange where they rivet to the spar doubler & spar cap. I could not get my old riveter to work, even with a larger-capacity, higher PSI compressor, so had to manually rivet about 16 rivets. Not bad, just time-consuming, since pressure had to be maintained on the backside of the flange to keep them flush with the spars.
Next, I obtained an electric 3" cutoff wheel a few days ago as well. I used this today to trim the aft spar attachment bracket. For reference, the first pic is a repeat from the other day. Remember, the top of the picture is the bottom of the horizontal stab. The tabs that stick up will be fastened to the aft fuselage attachment points much later down the road. Since the elevator will need to be fitted to this side of the spar, the side pieces must be removed to provide clearance. Pic 2 below shows the trimmed, deburred, and radius'd piece.
Lastly did some bench realignment to provide access to the box containing the elevator and horizontal stab skins, since that's the next step. I would have trial-fit the skin today, but these are thin skins, and kink easily. I'll wait for some helping hands.
Lastly, Part II, I decided to take a look at my old riveter; I filled it with oil the other day before first use (after 6 years of shelf duty), since this could affect the ability to pull rivets. Yup; it was low on oil, but by now my toes were going numb (see 1st para), so I called it a day. Since I thought I was only going to be there 1/2 or less, I never bothered turning on the propane heater.
