Brief Description:  Green (starboard) and Red (Port) side LED Navigati

03/10/2012
I have completed the Green (starboard) and Red (Port) side Navigation lights for the X-10 fiberglass wingtips. I looked into the usual Whelan style Nav lights but soon realized that everybody is going LED, and not the older style incandescent type lights. The LED draw much less current and have a life expectancy in excess of 30,000 hours! I found a company named LEDLight.com that sells many different types and style of LED lights that are used for automotive brake and turn signal lights. These LED lights fit into a standard BA15D Surface Mount Socket. I purchased three each of the Red and Green LED lights called, 24 LED Light S25, for $7.00 dollars each. There individual output is 60 forward Lumens and 30 side Lumens for a total of 270 Lumens intensity. This translates into two side firing set of LED and one forward pointing set of LED bulbs. If the LED intensity is not enough then there are other style LED bulbs that can be purchased but, I thought that the 24 LED Light S25 type bulb might work to start. For the blinking Strobe lights I am looking for a good set of LED strobes but other than some cheap automotive types I have yet to find a suitable replacement. So, I am leaning towards reverting back to the old style Tube Whelan strobes. They draw more current than LED’s and the strobe heads need to be replaced more often. And most likely will use a Whelan LED / Nav and Strobe light combination for the rear tail area.

Time about 7 hours for just the LED lights.
