Brief Description:  First Flight

Jan 19th 2013

Today was the day for the X-10 first flight. It was a perfect beautiful sunny Georgia January day with near no wind and unlimited visibility. At 10 am I decided to take-off on runway 36 and climb to 3500 ft flying a box or rectangle over the runway. When reaching 3500 ft. I set up the aircraft for 21.6 in manifold pressure and 2470 rpm’s for 155 mph at 3500 ft. with oil pressure of 93 psi, oil temp at 202 degree, CHT’s about 375 degrees, and EGT of ~1300 degree temp. Then after about 45 minutes I landed 36 without incidence. Proceeded to taxi to the hanger and removed the top and bottom cowling to check for anything irregular. A slight oil leak was found and I am in the process of finding the problem.
After replacing the cowls and filling up both tanks, so I now have a full fuel load (60 gallons), I returned for another X-10 test run. This time I departed runway 36 to the west and ran some test runs to break in the engine rings. I dialed in 24 inch manifold pressure and 2550 rpm at 2500 feet for a true 180 mph. Looks like 200 mph with wheel fairing is a real possibility! After about 0.5 hours the CHT was less than 400 degrees on all cylinders and EGT was about 1400 degrees. All was good and I was ready to stay up at least a full hour. (As you know with a new engine you must run the engine hard and fast for the first 10 hours or so until the engine rings are properly seated and oil consumption is stabilized). Then when turning right I descended from 2700 ft. to 2500 ft. with the airspeed exceeding 185 mph and the oil inspection door that I noticed had a bow in it popped open. (I have heard that this has happening to other people too). No big deal as it did not leave the aircraft, but I proceeded to land and resolve the problem. Actually I was close to the airport and inline for a 45 degree entry for landing runway 36. I deviated from Van’s plan and used a set of Cam locks and a spring hinge from an outside vender and now I need to reinforce the oil door with s
