Brief Description:  Hidden Door Spring Hinge and Cam Locks

SECTION 47-10 SPINNER & COWLING

10/21/2010

I choose to deviate from the plans to install my own custom design oil door that included a hidden pop-up hinge and a couple flush Cam lock that are from a Cessna aircraft.

Step … 1 .....I trimmed the shaded area of the oil door recess to fit a custom hidden door spring hinge. I left 3/8 inch as a perimeter along with two gussets at the lower half of the Oil Door Hinge.
I purchased the Hidden Hinge and a KM610-51 Cam lock from Non-Stop Aviation for only $50.00. But I think I am going to use two Cessna Cam Locks to secure the Oil Door because they fit better and I found 3 brand new Cessna Cam locks for only $15.00.

Step 2, Skipped this as I am upgrading to the Hidden Door Spring Hinge from Nonstop Aviation.

Step 3 … Placed the Hidden Door Spring Hinge on the inside of the Cowling, Match drilled #40 drill size and then riveted with AN426-3.5 rivets and reinforced with Aeropoxy being careful not to allow any to run into the piano hinge pivot.

Step 4…. Skipped this step as I am using upgraded flush Cam locks.

Step 5 … I trimmed the Cowl-10-01A Oil Door to fit the cut out hole in the cowling.

Step 6 & 7 … Match drilled with #40 drill holes the other side of the Hidden Door Spring Hinge into the Cowl-10-01A Oil Door. Then counter sunk the holes and after securing with Aeropoxy glue riveted with AN426-3-5 rivets.

Step 8 … Then riveted the two cam locks to the Oil Door with AN426 3.5 rivets after lightly counter sinking. Placed the kit supplied Oil Core to fit the Oil Door and trimmed to allow the two Cam Locks to function correctly. Mixed up some Aeropoxy Resin and glued the two together.

Step 9, 10 11 and 12 … These steps were not necessary.

Insured that the oil door was perfectly flush with the cowl and riveted the Hidden Pop-Up Hinge to the Oil Door with AN426-3-3.5 rivets. I only have to paint with UV Smooth Prime to complete the Oil Door project. Overall I was very pleased with my design and I don't have to look at the
