I drilled the 1/4" pilot hole and then cut the 3" hole in the inner rib to locate the fuel sender. I was a little nervous of cutting into the fuel tank, however there was 1/3" to 1/2" inch clearance between the rib and the tank and by going very slowly with the hole saw, I did not leave a mark on the fuel tank.
