Brief Description:  Longeron bending

OK, so L-angle doesn't like to be bent. I put in vise (wood pads), marked every 3/4 inch or so along the length to be bent, then started hammering witht he rubber mallet about 5 blows, move another 3/4 inch, another 5 wacks, and so on. The curve is repeatedly checked against the paper template I cut and glued to cardboard - well this wasn't accurate as the template bends, so I only used it for the 8 inches or so until the F-721B canopy deck starts and can be used as a template for the rest of the curve forward (note, the canopy deck starts at 28 1/4" back - the side longeron bend starts BACK from this leading edge. Many builders have screwed this up). The deck piece worked great as a template (as many others have discovered). I was able to bend the longeron to less than 1/16" error this way. Pic 3 shows the deck clamped on just to hold it for the pic. So remember - use the canopy deck as a guide (will cover 2/3 of the bend) and the template for the remainder. Another note - while pic 1 is mostly a joke, note the seamer pliers clamped on (in line with my inguinal ligament, heh heh). When hammering, I used my body and other hand to apply a counter twist and bend to the longeron, plus some downward force as I hammered. This allowed the bending to take place without the angle curving in another axis, a natural tendency.
