Brief Description:  Flap Trim & Turtle Deck Support

Some photographers came over from Cook Children’s Hospital to take pictures of Jonathon working on the plane for their kids wall. Every few years, they nominate kids to be highlighted in their main hallways and Jonathon was nominated this year. When they heard that he was helping his Dad build an airplane, they knew they had their location for shoot. I was pretty skeptical, afterall the plane is nowhere near complete, but they setup and took a bunch of photos, and then showed me some of the shots that they got. Some were quite good. I’ll be very interested to see which one they choose…

Anyway, Jon wanted to work on the plane so we installed some trim around the flap slot to see how it would bend – I think it will work ok, but I will need to apply some good adhesive all around. We also put those turtle deck support clips under the turtle deck. What a pain. Scott mentioned making sure to check these prior to nailing down your turtle deck, and I was already past that point, so I didn’t worry too much about it. There must be a lot of variation in the fiberglass parts they produce because there is no way that mine was going into the predrilled holes – it was about ¼” off and would have put a lot of pressure on the turtle deck – surely leading to cracking. So I positioned and drilled a hole in the new position. It still wound up putting some pressure on the turtle deck as I tightened down, time will tell if we get some cracking in this area. I didn’t want to leave off as I do believe that it adds a good measure of rigidity to the turtle deck area and takes stress off of rivets placed in the sail.

Solo flight went well. Flew from Spinks to Graham to Stephenville back to Spinks. It was pretty windy/gusty but I’m pleased with how everything went overall.
