Brief Description:  Refit Tube, Refit Turtle Deck, Carpet

As I mentioned in the last post, the turtle deck was about 1/2" too high after I cut the clearance hole - So, I knew I had to detach most of the back of the airplane so I could cut out some more hull and re-drill mounting holes. I was able to remove the frame bolts pretty easily, prop up the tube off the hull and trim the back wsithout too much trouble. I resealed and filled old holes with marine epoxy and covered really well with caulking. Re tried turtle deck and fit looked much better. So I reinstalled all the frame bolts and struts (a little harder to do, but not terrible) and started back on Section 17.

Next task was to cut, trim and glue turtle deck carpet down. Seemed easy enough, until all those compound curves started causing wrinkles. I was able to work the wrinkles out of one side, then I made a cut down the center channel so that the other side would fit. I wasn't very happy with the way it looked in the very back, so I put a top piece of carpet over about half the channel in the back - it looks better and hopefully so far back and behind that noone ever notices that its not "perfect". I also carpeted the main tube - that was easier - except trying to trowel glue onto a tube. That wasn't very easy. I pulled out the $200 deck provided by PA and test fit - I'm not sure if I'm happy or not. Time will tell - I still need to carpet them and I'm thinking of adding a small baggage compartment there as well.

PA Manual says to connect the turtle deck to the hull soon, but I still have some things I want to do in the back. I may want to put my heater in the back and I know there will be a few avionic pieces in the back - not to mention that I have not put one wire in the plane yet. I'll need to wire the trim, bilge and ground bus that came the other day...

Probably won't be making alot of progress for the rest of January - I'm scheduled to do some night flying tomorrow night, our new CEO/President starts Monday and will be demanding alot of time over the next weeks/months. I have two trips to Canada an
