Brief Description:  Fuel Tank Vents 1

Another small but time consuming project. The vent lines for the fuel tank come in from the wings through the sides of the fuselage at the bottom. The lines then route forward and up the side of the fuselage. The move forward to the firewall and then back down to the floor. There is a fitting through the floor that the vent line connects to. Vans has you modify a standard bulkhead fitting into the tank vent.

I wrapped the long portion of the fitting with tape to protect the threads and then I chucked it into my drill press. I used a chisle in my drill-press vise as a cutting tool and machined the threads off of the fitting. I then used a sharp knife and sand paper to smooth the machined section. I then used a section of angle to hold the fitting at 45 degrees and cut the angle using my bench sanding disk. A little more smoothing with 400 grit and the fitting came out great. I repeated this for the second fitting.

I dug through some leftover carb parts and found a couple last-chance screens from fuel intake seat. The screens fit perfectly inside the fitting with a sold interference fit, they will not come on their own.
