Brief Description: Rivet Aileron Brackets Right Wing, SB 16-03-28
I cleco'd on the brackets and noted that they both were touching the shop heads of adjacent skin to spar rivets. I used the scotchbrite wheel to remove a little material from the brackets where they made contact, then touched up the primer. When the primer was dry I riveted on the aileron inboard attach bracket and the doublers to comply with Van's Service Bulletin 16-03-28. I oriented the rivets with the factory head on the thinner material (inside wing) and shop heads on the thicker bracket angles. Had a bad smile on one rivet that cut right through the ceter of the rivet head. I could not center punch the rivet to start the drill for removal, so I used a Dremel tool with a very small grinding wheel to flatten the head and then estimated the center for the punch. I successfully drilled the head and snapped it off, then was able to drill the body of the rivet with a small drill and remove it from the thick bracket with a side cutter. Second attempt to set this rivet was successful.
I riveted the outboard aileron attach bracket, also orienting the rivets to put the shop head on the thicker material. Had one bad rivet there, too that I sucessfully drilled and replaced.
