Brief Description:  Trim Horizontal Stab

Finally back in the shop after a long layoff for several trips from Virginia to Ohio and major projects at work. Jason and I prepared to make the cuts in the horizontal stab skin to clear the elevator counterweight. As we puzzled with a way to get an accurate measurement for the cut, Jason came up with the idea of mounting the elevator outboard of the brackets. We used AN3-14 bolts (twice as long as the normal mounting bolts) and put those through the mounting brackets and the rod end bearings. The elevator was just outside the edge of the horizontal stab skin, so we were able to swing it up and down and get an excellent measurement for where the counterweight interfered with the skin. We added 1/8 inch per the plans and marked the cuts as well as finding the center for the 1/4 inch diameter radius we wanted on the inside. We drilled the corner with a pilot drill and then step drill, then cut the section out with a dremel cut off wheel. Smoothed everything with files, emory paper and scotchbrite to finish the cut out. Made the other three cut outs the same way.

While working with the elevators we noticed some of the rivets on the leading edge were loose. We knocked out the center pin with a nail and drilled the heads to remove the rivets. With two of us holding the skin we were able to align the inner and outer parts much better and get good rivets. Also added some rivets to the leading edge of the right elevator to close up some pillowing between rivets.
