Brief Description:  Verical Stab Spar and Skeleton

Furlough day number five. In my research on riveting with the C-frame I re-watched the video on EAA's Hints for Homebuilders. I had been using the cup set for the rivet gun in the C-frame which made the set higher than my table, requiring me to support the parts with wood blocks. In the video they put a cup set in the holder normally used for dimple dies to rivet, and this arrangement made my work level with the table and made the set up much easier to work with. Rivets came out much better, with only a couple that had to be drilled out. Used the C-frame set up to do the flush rivets near the bottom of the spar as well. For the lower rudder hinge brackets the rivets were too close to the bend to use the C-frame so I mounted the spar on the bench and drove the rivets with a mushroom head and bucking bar. Good results on all but one rivet where I pushed the rivet out with the bucking bar just as I squeezed the trigger on the gun. Successfully drilled the proud manufactured head and replaced the rivet. Cleco'd the skeleton together to begin riveting the ribs to the forward spar. First two rivets were Ok in the top rib. The first rivet I tried to set in the middle rib the gun slipped off the head and smiley'd the head but also made a couple of dings in the spar. Spent the rest of the day researching repair techniques in the manuals and on-line, then flattened the dents with a hammer and dolly, treated the remaining smileys as a corrosion repair and sanded them smooth, along the axis of the spar. Re-primed the affected areas and called it a day.
