Brief Description:  Avionics Programming and checkout

Rafael helped me to get the avionics working today along with Carlos from Grand Rapids. We continued to have problems communicating with the Garmin 696 and the Garmin SL30. I called Carlos and he felt there was a wiring issue. He is very knowledgeable and made up a block diagram of the wiring for all of the ARINC 429 I/O so we could see the big picture and ring out the wires. As it turns out there was an issue with the pin outs on the ARINC and a problem with programming the EFIS. Both were fixed and the system came to life. What a great relief, we only had to unbundle a few cables and because of the Carlos diagram, I have a much better understanding of how the system plays together.
We also tried the communication radio which worked fine and the intercom. The flip flop switch on the stick and the PTT buttons all work well. In all it was a very productive day. I could not test the VOR because the antenna is in the wing tip and not yet hooked up, but the VOR powers OK and in flagged.
