Brief Description:  Installing the Black Box (ok the Orange Box)

The Emergency Locater Transmitter (ELT) is one of those things you just have to do to keep the FAA happy even if they are somewhat obsolete, they are required. I had designed the hatch in the baggage compartment floor for the communications antenna on the right side of the plane and the hatch in the left baggage floor for the ELT. It was easy and straight forward to mount the unit to the hatch; the harder job was running the 45J wire to the instrument panel for the test lamp and switch and running the coax for the ELT antenna. I had to drill a few holes in the ribs under the baggage floor and add some snap bushings to run the coax to the antenna in the side cover plate. The install is neat, functional and just requires some fresh batteries and arming to be on line.
